22 Aug 2011An ultrasonic mosquito repeller uses ultrasound to repel mosquitoes and possibly other sorts of insects. Although, if you're looking for a specific insect repeller, it might be best to search for a product optimized against that kind of insect. In this case, we're trying to get rid of all those pesky mosquitoes and their annoying buzzing sounds. Keeping them at bay will also mean less or no mosquito bites anymore.
There are a couple of things you might want to know about ultrasonic mosquito repellers as there are some advantages but also disadvantages going for them. We'll also describe in which kind of situation these repellents can prove valuable so you don't accidently buy one when another type would have been more effective.
First things first, what exactly does the "ultrasonic" part in the product description mean? Well, ultrasound (or ultrasonic sound) is a high frequency sound. This frequency is at such a level that us mere humans can't hear it. In fact, that's just about the only difference between regular soundwaves and ultrasound, its frequency.
But the important aspect here is that many insects do hear these high frequency sounds. So you can probably guess it already, ultrasonic sound is supposed to scare of mosquitoes and other bugs.
There are some other applications of ultrasound, such as ultrasonic cleaning devices that produce vibrations to dislodge and remove small particles. But these applications have nothing else to do with mosquito repellers so we're not going into this with more detail. If you're interested though, you can always rely on Google to provide you with some more info about these other practical applications.
This is a question that's been asked quite often. Do these ultrasonic mosquito repellers really work? While there is no real scientific research that can prove ultrasound working on insects to keep them away, quite often you'll read that they are successful and useful for people that have bought an ultrasonic repeller in the past.
For us, we agree that they do work. But there are some limitations as to when and why an ultrasonic mosquito repeller will or won't work. You'll read about those limitations in a moment, in the disadvantages part. But first...
For starters, these types of insect repellers work with ultrasound. So that means no chemicals, tablets or artificial additive is used. If you're worried about using those plug-in mosquito repellers with tablets because you have kids or babies in the house, then you'll be relieved to hear this.
As mentioned above, humans can't pick up on ultrasound because the frequency is too high for us to hear. That means an ultrasonic mosquito repeller will have no effect on us and is perfectly safe. You'll find that many, if not all, of the ultrasonic repeller manufacturers also claim that their products are safe for pets such as dogs and cats. But do read instructions or features of the product itself for more information regarding this.
An ultrasonic mosquito repeller will probably repel other insects too. An added benefit of not having mosquitoes around, some other insects won't pop up either. Although, apprently spiders are not affected by ultrasound in the slightest, so if you're hoping to get rid of those, you might end up disappointed.
There are portable ultrasonic mosquit repellers available. Many of the ultrasonic devices can work with batteries. So you can carry them around with you, easily bring them to a picnic, a camping site, while hiking, etc. This could mean you won't have to use anti-mosquito creams or soaps but rather just bring alone an ultrasonic keychain mosquito repeller.
You're not destroying and killing nature. Whether you care about tiny mosquitoes or not, you're not killing them with these repellers. And because it doesn't work with harmful chamicals or poison, those materials won't end up seeping into the environment either.
The devices are easy to use and easy to implement within other pratical electronics. Because of this, you'll be able to find a couple of different, perhaps a bit weird, products with built-in mosquito repellers.
As mentioned, there's no actual scientific claim that can be used to backup the use of ultrasound. But that shouldn't be a real disadvantage considering many people are successfully using these repellers.
They don't work in every environment. Every type of mosquito repeller has its advantages in certain places and ultrasound is no different. Ultrasonic devices won't work optimally in rooms with lots of furniture, carpet and curtains. This is because the sound, eventhough we can't hear it, will bounce from surfaces but the effect will be decreased or the ultrasound can get absorded or muffled by certain fabrics. So practical applications, garages will less objects, kitchens and bathrooms with no carpets but smooth tiles,... and outdoor environments. These are places where ultrasonic mosquito repellers perform much better.
The uncertainty of getting rid of mosquitoes permanently. While some insects, pests and rodents will be affected by an ultrasonic device, there's quite a big chance that they will return after a while because they're building up a resistance. Some will return much faster than others (I'm looking at you, cockroach *angry face*). So if you're looking for more permanent solutions, check out some of the other available types of mosquito repellers.
An ultrasonic mosquito repeller can be handy but besides its apparent advantages it also comes with some disadvantages. Because of these advantages and disadvantages we advise you to purchase these to use in dynamic locations. This means if you're going camping or hiking, or on a picnic, to a barbecue,... This is due to their inability or uncertainty of effectively and permanently repelling mosquitoes and other insects in fixed domestic indoor areas, especially rooms with a lot of furnishing.
Althought, mosquito repellents using ultrasound might also come in handy in rooms if your only problem is a slight mosquito problem. By that we mean only a couple of mosquitoes that are coming indoors at night and no other pests or rodents that you want to get rid of.
So hopefully this information was useful to you. As always, we advise you to read the instructions or product features before purchasing a mosquito repeller just so you can be sure that you're getting what you need.
